While ther's no question that homeownership is worth it, it's important to remember that you also need to protect your investment. Theis responsibility doesn't need to be a burden - in fact, there are some gerat ways to keep your property looking its best, which are easy to work inot your exisiting schedule. When making your checklist, make sure you are thinking both inside and outside your home.

When making your checklist, make sure you are thinking both inside and outside your home.
- Start with the basics- protecting your home is important. Inspect, maintain, or replace your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Replace the batteries in smoke detectors two times a year and replace carbon monoxide detectors every 5-7 years. Test the detectors monthly to make sure they are still in working order.
- Spring brings with it pretty flowers, but also warmer weather. It won’t be long before you’re shutting off your heat and starting up your air conditioning. It is recommended to get your HVAC system serviced before engaging the A/C. Not only can a quick service from a professional ensure it wasn’t damaged during the winter, but they can also check to make sure it’s operating at maximum efficiency. While you’re at it, you can change out your filters, and clean/vacuum any air vents in need of a little TLC.
- Conduct a home inspection. While you don’t need to call out a professional, it’s always a good idea to visually inspect your home- especially the roof and foundation. Noticing damage early can help prevent more serious repairs.
- Spring also brings lots of spring showers, so you’ll want to make sure that your gutters and downspouts are clean and clear. A clog could lead to water damage. Keep an eye out for water stains, which could be signs of a leak in a gutter.
- Window and door screens are great ways to appreciate a cool breeze on a nice spring day. Inspect your screens for tears and holes, and if necessary, repair or replace them.
- If you have a lawn, sprinklers and irrigation systems are probably a routine part of the upcoming warm weather season. Inspect your system and make sure that it’s working correctly. While you’re at it, you might also want to consider adopting greener techniques for operating your system.
- Landscaping in general is very important. One reason why spring is known as one of the hottest real estate markets is because the power of great landscaping (flowers, trees, and lawns) enhancing curb appeal. Make sure your yard is well maintained. Have your trees trimmed and avoid having to worry about falling branches during a storm.
- If you own your own lawn equipment, now is the time to have them serviced, so you don’t have to worry about them during the spring or summer.
- Spring is also the start of the busy grilling season. Clean the grill and get it ready for the upcoming outdoor entertaining you plan to do all season long.
